Vitamin D50 µg
Vitamin D is important for the metabolism of calcium in the body
We can produce Vitamin D in the skin during exposure to sunlight (UVB rays). We can also absorb vitamin D in the intestine from vitamin D-containing foods or supplements.
It is recommended that we measure our blood levels of vitamin D3, measured as serum 25-OH vitamin D (calcidiol). If these values are below 50 nmol / L, using a vitamin D supplement is necessary. The desired reference range is between 75 and 150 nmol / L.
STR Nordic Vitamin D3 contains 50 micrograms per capsule, which is what is recommended to keep blood values within the desired reference range.
Vitamin D regulates the absorption of calcium
Vitamin D is important for the metabolism of calcium in the body. It regulates the uptake of calcium and phosphorus in the intestine, for reabsorption in the kidneys, and for storage of minerals in the bones. It is therefore important to maintain a stable concentration of calcium in the blood.
If you eat too little oily fish and do not take cod liver oil, it may be a good idea to take a dietary supplement with vitamin D. This is especially true for children and young people, as well as the elderly.
Vitamin D3 has greater biological activity
Vitamin D exists in several different types. The two best known are ergocalciferol (vitamin D2) and cholecalciferol (vitamin D3). These were previously thought to have the same biological effect, but recent research shows that vitamin D3 has greater biological activity.
The form that occurs most frequently in humans is cholecalciferol, as it is formed in the skin by sun exposure and found in seafood (e.g. fatty fish and cod liver oil).
Good sources of vitamin D:
Vitamin D3 (Cholecalciferol) is found in some animal foods. Vitamin D3 (Ergocalciferol) is found in fungi. Besides sunlight exposure directly on the skin, the most important sources of vitamin D are:
- Oily fish (mackerel, trout, salmon, herring), fish roe, and fish livers.
- Butter and milk with added vitamin D.
- All cod liver oil and fish oils are fortified with vitamin D, and together with dietary supplements are the most important source of vitamin D.
